About Our Brand...

The Kiger Mustangs and other horses bred and born here at Firefly Fields are freeze branded on their left shoulder. Our brand consists of a stylized firefly over three swooping leaves and is registered with the State of Michigan. We do this so all horses bred by us are identifiable for their entire lives. This allows us to keep track of them, and it allows future breeders and/or owners to recognize their quality and history.

When designing our brand, important consideration was given to its style. We wanted something elegant and professional, unique, and of course it had to translate well into an actual brand that would show up on the horses' hair. We combined a firefly and the letter "F" with the idea of a "field." In addition to being an identification brand for our horses, it has become a brand of our integrity, commitment, and mission. It is incorporated in our logo design and is a recognized stamp of quality and integrity within the Equine Community.

***  It is important to note that freeze branding does not hurt the horse in any way. The iron is super cooled using isopropyl alcohol and dry ice. It is pressed onto a clean-shaven area of the horse for approximately 30 seconds. This is just long enough for the hair follicles to be damaged, so the hair grows in white (or black on a grey horse). The horse feels absolutely nothing during this process. In addition, branding is usually performed by a veterinarian or with a veterinarian present for legal purposes, but also for safety's sake.
